As you prepare for your interview, here is some advice that will elevate your game!

Keep in mind that interviews are aimed at finding strong matches more than providing candidate qualifications. Because the interviewer already knows your work history from your resume, you do not need to focus on it during the discussion unless asked by the interviewer. Instead, you should focus on your career milestones & achievements, provide insights into your personal side, and offer additional details to show you are the right candidate for the role.

Your goal during an interview is to match who you are and your personal story with the company’s brand and biggest need. Your ability to determine the organization’s main need and demonstrate how you can fill it provides you with a competitive edge.

Use this strategic playbook to elevate your game during your next interview.

When Asked “Tell Me About Yourself”

Focus your response as follows:

  • Start with an accomplishment that is career related (was chosen to participate in xyz training, changed a process that saved x hours of time)
  • Followed by an accomplishment or anecdote that provides some insight of who you are as a person  ( I ran a marathon, coach my child’s soccer team….)
  • Finish with I would be happy to go into more detail about any specifics of my background.

Focus on the Career Milestones You Achieved

Determine what the company needs from the role and how your accomplishments position you to fill these needs:

  • Analyze the job description.
  • Look for phrases such as “required,” “must have,” “highly desired,” “what we are looking for,” and “what we need.”
  • Show how your knowledge, skills, and experience match those in the job description.

Share Personal Insight into Who You Are

Demonstrate how you would fit with the company’s culture:

  • Review the About Us page on the organization’s website to determine the company’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Focus on three personal characteristics that align with the culture, such as “self-starter” and “team player.”
  • Match who you are and your personal story with the company’s brand and main need as you answer the interview questions.
  • Be able to discuss why the company appeals to you as a potential employer.

Show You Are Open to Providing Details

Mention that you would be happy to share more information about your background and deeper insights into your career:

  • Provide in-depth information about who you are, what you have accomplished, and how you can add value to the organization. Avoid answering yes or no without providing an example to support it.
  • Don’t be afraid to draw on transferable skills or education if you don’t have hands on work experience in a specific area.
  • Include relevant stories and examples that demonstrate your ability to fill the company’s need.
  • Communicate whether you are interested in the role and organization. Be enthusiastic!
