Here are three reasons why a temp accounting job may be great for your career.

1) Flexibility

Working at a temp accounting job provides flexibility for pursuing other interests. For example, you may want to spend more time with your family, take care of a sick parent or travel the world. Also, you may decide to work only during peak seasons. In addition, you may be able to work a few days a week, set your own schedule or take a few months off so you remain in the workforce and enhance your skill set while freeing up time for personal needs. If you decide to work full-time down the road, you’ll be able to market yourself as a prized accounting candidate with regular employment on your resume. Furthermore, you may choose to work more than one part-time job to gain additional accounting skills while receiving the equivalent of a full-time income.

2) Networking

When you work at a temp accounting job, you expand your network. Because the staffing agency has a significantly wider network than an individual has, you may be able to work for a company you couldn’t have entered on your own. Also, working at a variety of temp jobs gives you additional access to colleagues, managers, executives and employers you may not have met otherwise who may be able to help you secure future employment. In any case, you can request to use them as references for your next interview or find out whether they can point out any job leads that fit your skill set and experience.

3) Potential Full-Time Employment

Depending on your skills, experience and fit with company culture, working at a temp accounting job may lead to full-time employment. Because you begin working for the company on a trial basis, it’s important you add all the value you can to show you should be offered a full-time position. For example, show up early, stay late when requested, efficiently and effectively complete your tasks, and request additional work when time allows. Also, ensure that both your employer and staffing agency know whether you’re interested in full-time employment so they can plan accordingly. In addition, you should be able to work at different companies until you find the best match for your interests and abilities.
