Successful accounting professionals use their knowledge of which areas they excel in to add value to their company. Such professionals know that sustainable career growth is dependent on starting on the right path. Part of finding the right path is determining your sweet spot, where your passion and talents converge with opportunities to do work that you love. To find your own career sweet spot, use these five strategies.

How Can I Get to A Sweet Spot In My Career?

1. Know Your Vision, Values, and Goals

Create your personal vision, values, and goals so you know where you want your accounting career to go. It will be easier to find opportunities when you know what you are looking for. You can avoid following a path that is inconsistent with what you believe in, which would sacrifice your self-esteem and integrity.

2. Identify Your Passion

Determine your passion and how it fits with your role, employer, and company strategy. Think about what you care about most in your career, which tasks energize you, and what type of work gets you in the flow. Evaluate what you enjoy learning about, which skills easily come to you, and which areas of accounting you could continue exploring while remaining engaged. Those are the areas you should be pursuing when considering your career path and company’s business strategy. If there is not a good fit, maneuver into a new position, employer, or path you are passionate about.

3. Develop Your Style

Create your own style. Use your strengths and what works for you to develop a process that aligns with what you do best. Think about your leadership style, including which techniques you use most often to motivate and engage others. You may lead by making everyone feel like part of a team or by appealing to each team member’s personal motivators. Or, you might lead by presenting clear logic or challenging teammates to reach an inspiring goal. If you need help deciding on your style, ask your manager, mentor, trusted coworker, or other people who know you well. When you know your leadership style, seek a role where you can use it and be appreciated for it.

4. Determine Your Market Value

Think about who would pay you for your skills and passion. Determine which type of employer you want to help and what skills and experience you need to become more marketable. You will narrow down which opportunities are the best to pursue.

5. Network

Your network is a powerful source for finding accounting opportunities. With all the knowledge and experience available among your connections, your odds of finding opportunities in line with your passion and goals are strong. Members of your network possess the insights and answers to help you assess your career sweet spot and identify what areas you need to develop in.
