Laws and regulations against discriminatory hiring practices in Canada clearly outline employers’ responsibilities for ensuring fair treatment of job candidates. As a member of The Association of Canadian Search, Employment & Staffing Services (ACSESS), Mercer Bradley is proud to show adherence to the Association’s Code of Ethics & Standards and comply with all anti-discrimination hiring practices.

1) Anti-Discrimination Laws in Canada

Employers in Canada are obligated to offer employment without discrimination and to guard against harassment based on race, creed, sex, disability, age, sexual orientation, marital status, family status and other prohibited grounds. Some jurisdictions also prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and expression, on criminal convictions unrelated to employment, or criminal convictions that have been pardoned. Discrimination may be direct, such as a job advertisement asking no females to apply, or indirect, such as stating that employees must be able to work on Sundays. Human rights legislation prohibits making threats of reprisal or taking action against an employee for claiming or enforcing a human right. Because harassment based on a prohibited ground violates human rights legislation in Canada, employers must have policies in place to prevent and address such harassment in the workplace.

 2) ASCESS Code of Ethics & Standards

As a member of ASCESS, Mercer Bradley pledges to uphold the Code of Ethics & Standards. Part of the Code involves adhering to anti-discrimination policies. We observe the highest principles of integrity, professionalism and fair practice when dealing with candidates, clients, employees and all regulatory authorities. Mercer Bradley respects the confidentiality of records in compliance with law and good business practices. We treat candidates and employees without prejudice and will not accept orders that are discriminatory. Mercer Bradley will not limit the right of a candidate or employee to accept the employment they choose. We acknowledge that compliance with the Code of Ethics & Standards is in the best interest of ACSESS member companies, their candidates, employees, client organizations, and the reputation of the search, employment and staffing services profession in Canada.
