INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES TO IMPRESS
May 12th, 2009
The key to a good interview is to be able to sell yourself in a natural and relaxed way without appearing overstated or arrogant.
The trap many candidates fall into is that they are so concerned with not appearing arrogant that they do not talk about their strengths much at all. Clearly this is not the right approach, the example I always give is to imagine you’re selling your car… if your car has a turbo you’re DEFINITELY going to find a way to bring that into conversation with a prospective buyer.
Well the same’s true of selling yourself, find subtle ways to let the interviewer know about your turbos!
Look for appropriate points in the conversation to drop in information about your experience and skills. Asking questions can be a great way to demonstrate your research and intelligence. Or just simply expand upon your answer - instead of saying “I manage 3 staff” say “I manage 3 staff, which I really enjoy actually as I get a real buzz from helping people fulfill their potential. And I’ve received great feedback from my GM on that”.
And don’t forget the basics:
- maintain good eye contact;
- have good posture with confident body language;
- show a genuine interest in the employer and the job;
- and don’t forget to smile!
